Sources: Trump warned of the consequences of the war

Several people close to Donald Trump are said to have warned the president of the political risks of attacking Iran in the weeks before the attack. This is stated by sources with insight to CNN. The concerns include that the war lacks support among ordinary Americans and that the dissatisfaction risks further worsening the Republicans' prospects ahead of the mid-term elections in the fall.

Matthew Bartlett, a Republican strategist who previously worked in the Trump administration's State Department, shares the picture. He says that no one believes that the war is popular and that the outcome "at best" will be that the government will simply lose focus on economic issues.

- But at worst, this could be a political disaster and a disaster for generations for Iran and for the Republican Party, he says.

Trump fires Kristi Noem – appoints successor

Donald Trump is firing Kristi Noem, Secretary of Homeland Security, he announced on Truth Social.

Her replacement will be Markwayne Mullin, senator and former MMA fighter from Oklahoma.

Noem will instead be appointed special envoy for "The Shield of the Americas", a new security initiative for the Western Hemisphere that Trump said will be presented on Saturday.

On Tuesday, Noem was questioned before the Senate, which according to WSJ sources contributed to Trump's decision. Among other things, Noem was asked about her decision to spend $200 million, equivalent to about SEK 1.8 billion, on an advertising campaign encouraging repatriation.

Noem claimed that Trump approved the campaign, which Trump denied.
