Huovinen: Russia wants to force Ukraine to back down
Around 500 drones and 70 missiles were used in last night's Russian attacks on Ukraine, most of which were directed at Kyiv, where at least 22 people were killed.
Military expert Johan Huovinen says in SVT that it is unusual for Russia to use so many missiles in one attack. Usually it is around 20 missiles, he says.
Tonight's attack comes after recent Ukrainian drone attacks on targets in Russia, including the country's energy sector.
- The Russian side wants to escalate the situation in order to get Ukraine to de-escalate. At the same time, it wants to show the Ukrainian side that Russia has a significantly greater ability to carry out this type of attack, says Huovinen.
Zelenskyj after the night's attacks: Will take revenge
Ukraine will take revenge for the night's deadly Russian attacks on Kyiv. This is what President Volodymyr Zelenskyj says, according to AFP.
On Thursday, Zelenskyj visited an apartment building that was hit in the attack. There he was asked by reporters whether Ukraine will respond to the Russian attack.
- Definitely, he replied.
At least 21 people were killed and 85 injured in the attacks, according to Ukraine's state rescue service.
