2,000 firefighters fighting fires in France
Several extensive forest and land fires continue to rage in southern France, writes TT. According to Franceinfo, there are fires in about 30 places and 2,000 firefighters are participating in the extinguishing work.
3,000 people were evacuated on Thursday after a fire broke out at a campsite in the town of Sainte-Marie-la-Mer, in southwestern France.
A red warning for very high fire risk has been issued in six departments on the Mediterranean.
Fires rage in France – 3,000 evacuated
The French rescue service is fighting extensive forest fires in southern France on Thursday.
Around 800 firefighters and 150 vehicles have been deployed in the regions of Aude and Hérault, where the largest fires are raging. In total, about 900 hectares of land are burning.
In the neighboring Pyrénées-Orientales region, a fire has spread dangerously near the town of Canet-en-Roussillon. About 3,000 people have been forced to evacuate and the town's industrial area is threatened, writes Le Parisien.
- Our main battle concerns the industrial area, where there are many industrial buildings. Some contain polluting or flammable substances, and several companies are of great importance for both the economy and employment, says the prefect of Pyrénées-Orientales.
The fires come after several weeks of drought. According to Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu, about 7,000 fires have broken out since the start of the summer season.
Thousands of extra deaths in France during the heat wave
At least 2,025 more deaths than expected occurred in France between June 22 and 28 when the country was plagued by the intense heat wave. This was announced by Health Minister Stéphanie Rist, who also warns that the statistics are not yet completely complete, reports AFP.
Deaths have increased in particular among people over 45, Rist says.
The heat wave was in many places the worst the country has experienced and a number of heat records were broken.
