NATO's future

US top commander for Europe resigns – NATO under pressure

The top US commander for Europe and Africa, General Christopher Donahue, resigned on Thursday. Bloomberg reports.

It sends another signal that the defense of Europe is not at the top of Donald Trump's agenda.

Donahue, who is seen as one of the rising stars in US defense, will be temporarily replaced by a lower-ranking general until Donald Trump appoints a replacement. Donahue has had the job for 18 months and was nominated by Joe Biden.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth's plan is to get rid of as many generals appointed by Biden as possible, the newspaper reports.

NATO commander: Europe has plugged US gaps

Europe has plugged most of the gaps after the US withdrawals in Europe. NATO commander and US Air Force General Alexus Grynkewich tells Reuters.

“Most people probably don’t know this, even though it was reported last night, but in just a few weeks, the European allies have largely filled the gaps that emerged after the US cuts in NATO’s force model,” he says.

The remaining gaps concern areas where Europe still lacks the ability to fully replace US capabilities. According to Grynkewich, the alliance is working to develop equivalent capabilities that can provide the same operational effect.
