There is an ancient tradition in Thailand that nobody should be seen to be higher than the king. In the past, ordinary people were forbidden from looking out of their windows when the monarch went past. King Vajiralongkorn is reviving many old traditions, including this one.

This is a problem for the residents of the Rattanakosin View condominium in Bangkok’s royal district, because every time there is a palace ceremony they are ordered to keep their curtains closed and stay off their balconies. 2/3
They just had to spent 72 hours with curtains closed during the coronation. Now on May 9 they have to do it again for the royal ploughing ceremony.
As somebody remarked when I mentioned this issue before, the condo should probably be renamed Rattanakosin No-View. 3/3
