140,000 demonstrators took to the streets of Paris to protest against the government.

At the very front was Nobel laureate in literature Annie Ernaux, 82.

- I want to thank Annie Ernaux for being here, says opposition leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon.

The demonstration is described as "a march against high living costs and passivity towards the climate", according to the organizer.

Around 30,000 protesters were expected on Sunday, but according to the organizer, over 140,000 have turned up.

Among them was the recent Nobel Prize winner in literature Annie Ernaux. She walked side by side with opposition leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon, who was one of the initiators behind the demonstration.

The award-winning author has long been a heavy critic of incumbent President Emmanuel Macron. Last week, she published an open letter in which she wrote that she was shocked by developments in the country.

"This government is allowing the rich to attack our pillars, our solidarity, and our social protection," she wrote.

In an interview with La Place, she singles out left-wing leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon as the rightful successor to the presidency.

- For me, it is Jean-Luc Mélenchon who goes the furthest in the concrete realization of equality between men and women. I have never separated the two, she says.
