Weather Forecast: Ice-cold 90s winter awaits Sweden

Now is the time to dust off your warmest winter jacket. 

 

Winter is approaching and according to the forecast: a really cold one. 

 

- We can expect cold already in November, says Mikael Luhr, meteorologist at Klart. 

 

Winter will soon be thundering over Sweden. And by meteorological standards, the next three months are expected to be periodically colder than normal, the weather service Klart's forecast shows. 

 

Which Svenska Dagbladet was the first to report on. 

 

- In connection with the cold periods, it can be about as cold as it used to be during the winters of the 90s. About one to three degrees colder across the country, says Mikael Luhr, meteorologist at Klart, to Aftonbladet.

More cold air bursts 

 

There are several reasons for the cold weather. 

 

And according to Mikael Luhr, there are above all two weather phenomena that can give Sweden one - or a couple - of cold periods in the coming months. 

 

- One of the phenomena is called La Niña and means that the surface water in large parts of the Pacific Ocean is colder than normal. It affects the global weather pattern and also the Swedish weather, he says. 

 

La Niña increases the likelihood of high pressure blockages in Europe which may contribute to cold periods here in Sweden.

Early snow season 

 

The snow season in Siberia has started early this year, which may mean cold periods in Sweden; through a series of chain effects in the atmosphere. 

 

- During early autumn, there has been more snow than normal in Siberia. It looks like a larger snow cover will settle there, which could contribute to it becoming a high pressure that could possibly disrupt or upset the polar vortex over the North Pole, says Mikael Luhr and continues: 

 

- That in turn could lead to one or more cold periods with us. With it will not be cold constantly this winter. The terrible weather is expected to arrive only at the end of November. 

 

Until then, mild weather is forecast. 

 

- Winter will be felt gradually. In the coming weeks, the weather is expected to be mild and cloudy, says Mikael Luhr.
