Chinese journalist wrote about metoo - gets jailed
Journalist Sophia Huang Xueqin, who instigated the Chinese metoo movement in 2018, has been sentenced to five years in prison. This is reported by AFP and refers to a statement from an activist group that monitored the case. The group states that the journalist is being sentenced for having encouraged the overthrow of power.
Sophia Huang Xueqin collected testimonies from victims of sexual abuse in early 2018 and was arrested along with another follower of the metoo movement in 2021.
Sarah Brooks, head of the human rights organization Amnesty's China department, directs harsh criticism at the verdict and calls it "completely baseless".
