Union or division? Time is running out for the French left
After the National Assembly's victory in the EU elections and Emmanuel Macron's shock decision to call new elections, a battle against time begins for several French parties. Now the question is whether the divided left can unite in three weeks to resist right-wing extremism's historic results in the EU elections, reports several French media.
“To organize in a hurry. "Several politicians have urged left-wing parties to unite to limit the gains of far-right parties, after Emmanuel Macron decided on Sunday to dissolve the National Assembly, an hour after the announcement of the EU election results in France," reports public service news site France Info.
"The shock is all the greater given that the left - which accounts for around 30 percent of the electorate - is in a deplorable state," Le Monde analyses. "It's time for crisis meetings" at the socialist party, the newspaper continues.
