Hope Harris is tough She will need that

I hope Kamala Harris has elephant skin.

She will need that when Donald Trump goes into top gear to damage her credibility.

Before Joe Biden announced late last Sunday that he no longer wants to be the Democrats' candidate in this year's US presidential election, the outcome seemed more or less clear. Trump would take home the match as the opposition was weak.

But now all the balls are up in the air again. Anything can happen.

For now, we can assume that Vice President Kamala Harris will be named the Democratic presidential candidate during the convention in Chicago in August. And if so, I hope she is tough-skinned and has good self-confidence.

She will need it. Donald Trump's most prominent trait is not niceness. On the contrary, he is infernally mean. His attacks on Harris began already hours after Biden's announcement. Trump announced that it would be much easier to win over Kamala Harris than Joe Biden. Naughty, Donald.

But is it true? According to the normal logic of politics, it could be so. Harris is not a middle-aged white man.

It may also be more difficult for Trump to be rude to a woman 19 years his junior with solid experience as a prosecutor than the near-age Biden.

Kamala Harris' mother is from India, father from Jamaica and she is female. She has also failed to show her forefoot during her 3.5 years in the post of vice president.

But Biden's defection injects new life and new confidence into the Democratic presidential campaign. Her party mates seem to be closing in behind her. They give her a chance to win.

And, not least important, the money rolls into the campaign coffers. After Biden's announcement, a new record was set, half a billion kroner in just over seven hours, for an organization that collects money from the grassroots.

It is, in short, a new location.

You can feel sorry for Joe Biden. It's not easy to get voted off, especially when almost the whole world is witnessing it.

But Joe Biden has himself to blame. His self-perception did not match reality.

Just a few days ago, he claimed that he was in good shape, was sure to win. Only God could stop his candidacy, the Catholic Biden said:

- It depends if the Lord Almighty comes down and tells me, then maybe I will (withdraw), Joe Biden said in a television interview.

Apparently the Lord saw what Biden himself did not perceive. Namely that he lost the thread, stared blankly into the air, couldn't find the words and staggered up the airplane stairs.

But Joe Biden does not bear the full responsibility for withdrawing from the race for the presidency just over three months before the election. A large part of the responsibility naturally lies with the Democratic Party.

I would like to say that it was similar to predatory behavior on an old person. It hurt to witness. Someone or a few would have stopped a long time ago. American presidents always have a rigid program. Few, if any, 86-year-olds would make it. That's how old Biden will be when the next term ends in 2029.

The discussion about Joe Biden's old age was low-intensity for a long time. It exploded after the first debate of the election year, on CNN on June 27. Biden gave an almost moronic impression.

Afterwards, the president excused his lackluster performance by saying that he had had a grueling program and was exhausted. It won't do.

The next devastating blow to Biden's ambitions came when he contracted covid five days ago. He canceled the program and flew home to Delaware to isolate himself.

It contrasted very unfavorably for Biden against Trump's contemporary activities. Minutes after Trump escaped an assassination attempt, he raised his clenched fist and urged fight, fight, fight.

The next day he sat on the podium at the Republican convention in Milwaukee. Seemingly unaffected.

Outside the White House, protesters chanted "Thank you Joe, time to go".

The West has rarely needed a more alert and resilient leader in the United States than today. We are hopefully closer to the goal now.
