Unsurprising absence

Since then, her husband has been convicted on 34 charges, sparred with debatedJoe Biden, and had a birthday party - without her being seen by his side.

So what is going on?

Reporters have asked fundraiser organizers if they've met her — they haven't. They have asked the ex-president when he was in court - without an answer. In addition, they have asked her office several times for comment, even then without a response.

When Donald Trump received his sentence in May, her social media echoed blankly, unlike his son who quickly jumped out and condemned the verdict.

According to Katherine Jellison, a professor at Ohio University, the absence is not surprising. Melania Trump kept a low profile even during the 2020 presidential race - she does not seem to want to be a "traditional politician's wife", which is sometimes used to reach out to female voters in the United States, she told AP.

Rumors of a deal

According to information to the American gossip magazine Page Six, the Trump spouses have an agreement.

- Melania has made a deal with her husband that if he wins the presidential election, she does not have to be the first lady on duty 24/7, says a source to the newspaper.

At the same time, it is speculated that their son, Barron Trump, will enroll at New York University this fall. According to the same source, Melania Trump will be a "hands-on" mother, who plans to spend part of each month in New York.

The son's possible studies, combined with the father's potential role as president, will be stressful - especially in a town that votes for the Democrats. Then "Melania wants to be close," says the source. In addition, she must "feel safe" in the city.

If the information is correct, it is not the first time the son's studies have come before the White House. When Donald Trump was sworn in as president in 2017, it took several months before mother and son moved into the White House. Then the reason was that Barron Trump would be able to finish school.
