The shooter fires at least eight shots in close succession. The crowd behind Trump crouches down and several people scream. A bodyguard stationed on another roof looks up for a second, takes aim and fires.

The gunner is hit and dies and the gunfire stops. In about seven seconds it's over.

The picture shows the bullet

The New York Times has published an image showing what appears to be a bullet whizzing past just behind Trump's head.

Michael Harrigan, a retired FBI special agent, says he, too, believes the photo does indeed show the projectile.

- The angle seems a little too low to have passed through his ear, but it is not impossible if the gunman fired several shots, he tells the newspaper.

The shooter registered as a Republican

One man in the audience died and two men were seriously injured in the shooting. A few hours later, the FBI announces that the shooter has been identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks from Pennsylvania.

He was registered as a Republican, according to US media.

The motive for the crime is not yet known.

The assassination attempt on ex-president Donald Trump has been condemned by leaders around the world.

"Sweden stands behind the United States and wishes Donald Trump a speedy recovery," writes Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson on X.
