The climate threat The threats to species richness
Rare cactus eradicated by sea level rise - first in US
The unusual cactus species Pilosocereus Millspaughii grows six meters tall and smells of garlic. At night, the flowers reflect moonlight and thus attract pollinators. Now it is extinct in Florida, becoming the first species to be lost as a result of sea level rise in the United States, writes AFP.
- Unfortunately, the species may be an indicator of how other coastal plants will be affected by climate change, says ecologist Jennifer Possley to the news agency.
The cactus is still found in the wild in a few places in the Caribbean.

Researchers: Warmest June in Greece since the 60s
Greece recorded the warmest June since 1960, the head of the Athens National Observatory, Kostas Lagouvardos, told AFP:
- June 2024 was characterized by long periods of high temperatures which for several days exceeded the normal seasonal temperatures throughout the country.
A heat wave has pushed the temperature in southeastern Europe well above average, data from the EU's climate service Copernucus show. In Athens, the warmest month of June was measured since the measurements began just over 160 years ago.
