There is a high risk of polio virus spreading in the Gaza Strip. That is according to the World Health Organization WHO, according to Reuters. International spread cannot be ruled out either.
On July 16, the Gaza Ministry of Health reported that the virus had been found in the sewage. On Thursday, employees from the WHO and Unicef are expected to go to Gaza to collect stool samples and thereby make a risk assessment. After that, a decision on measures, which may for example include mass vaccination, must be made.
The journal Science writes that no human has yet been registered as infected, but that given the current chaos in Gaza, there may be undetected cases.
Polio can lead to paralysis and mainly affects children under the age of five.

Surgeons testify: What we saw in Gaza is indescribable
Two American surgeons – Mark Perlmutter and Feroze Sidhwa – testify in Politico about their experiences in war-torn Gaza during the spring. Both have long experience of working in conflict zones, but neither was prepared for the extent of the suffering.
"This is how we imagine the first few weeks of a zombie apocalypse would look - and smell," they write.
In an interview with CBS News, Perlmutter argues that Israeli snipers deliberately shoot children.
- I have photographs showing two children who were shot so precisely in the chest, I could not have placed my stethoscope more precisely over their hearts, and in the side of the head of the same child. No toddler is accidentally shot twice by "the best snipers in the world," he says.
