UN Climate Chief: Heat wave is a brutal reminder
The ongoing heat wave in Britain and France, among others, is a brutal reminder of the effects of climate change. This is what UN climate chief Simon Stiell says, according to AFP.
– Science clearly shows that human-driven climate change is making these heat waves more frequent and more extreme, he says.
He also highlights that India has also been hit by an extreme heat wave in parallel.
UN Agency: New heat records await in the coming years
Global
temperatures are expected to remain at record levels this year and the
next four years. The UN agency, the World Meteorological Organization
(WMO), warns of this, AFP reports.
According to the organization,
there is a 75 percent probability that the average temperature between
2016 and 2030 will be more than 1.5 degrees above the pre-industrial
average. It is also very likely that some of the next five years will be
warmer than the record year 2024.
The cause is climate change,
which is largely due to the burning of fossil fuels, in combination with
the natural phenomenon El Niño.
