Middle East Crisis Peace Talks

Report: Iran deal done – waiting for Trump’s yes

US and Iranian negotiators have reached an agreement and now only need Trump’s approval, two US sources told Axios.

– (Trump) told the negotiators that he wants a few days of reflection, one of them said.

The agreement reportedly means that the ceasefire will be extended for 60 days and that negotiations on Iran’s nuclear program will begin. Iran is reported to be committing not to develop nuclear weapons.

According to the sources, the agreement means that shipping through the Strait of Hormuz will resume without restrictions or tariffs. Iran will also remove all sea mines within 30 days.

According to the agreement, the US blockade of Iranian ports will be lifted as commercial shipping is restored.

Iran has not commented.

Trump: Don't be pressured by the economy – Americans understand why we're at war

The rising energy prices and their impact on Americans will not pressure Donald Trump into a faster deal with Iran, he says according to the Financial Times.

During a cabinet meeting at the White House, he says that Americans understand the reasons for the war.

– They understand that Iran simply cannot have nuclear weapons. I'm doing it for the world, I'm not doing it just for us.

Trump also accuses Iran of dragging out a peace deal in anticipation of the US mid-term elections in November, hoping to get better terms, writes The Guardian.

– They think they're going to wait me out, you know, "we're waiting him out, he has mid-term elections."
