Details: Russian general targeted in Moscow bomb attack
Three people were killed and another 21 were injured in a bombing at a restaurant in central Moscow on Saturday. A Russian general may have been the target of the attack, according to information in Russian exile media.
The explosion occurred around 6 p.m. on Saturday evening, local time. A woman tried to enter the premises with an explosive device, but was reportedly stopped by a security guard.
The target of the attack were guests attending a private event on the restaurant's terrace, writes the state-controlled Russian business newspaper Kommersant.
High security
According to information in independent Russian exile media, a birthday party was taking place for a high-ranking general. However, the information is still unconfirmed. The pro-Kremlin newspaper Izvestia writes that a wedding party was taking place in the premises.
Kommersant writes that the guard became suspicious of the woman who had come to the restaurant to deliver a package, which she described as a gift. The bomb was allegedly detonated when the guard checked on her. The woman, the guard and a guest were killed.
Investigators suspect that the bomb was detonated remotely and that the woman did not know the contents of the package, the newspaper writes.
The restaurant remains closed
A large number of police and emergency vehicles were sent to the restaurant, which is located on Kudrinskaya Square, where one of Moscow's "seven sisters", the so-called Stalinist skyscrapers, stands.
The restaurant's head chef Carmine Aliferi initially played down the incident.
"Everything is fine with us, our restaurant and kitchen are in excellent condition... There were only minor problems outside the restaurant," Aliferi wrote on Instagram. The posts have since been deleted.
The restaurant will be closed on Sunday, according to the website.
