US President Donald Trump says he has decided not to carry out a planned wave of attacks on Iran.
At the same time, he demands that an agreement with Iran be reached quickly.
Reports that the US is preparing major attacks on energy facilities in Iran have been pouring in in recent days. During the night to Sunday, Donald Trump stated that the US will wait with new attacks on the country.
According to the president, the US has been asked by countries in the Middle East – including Iran – not to proceed with the attacks and that they are approaching an agreement.
“In light of this request, for the future good of the world and to ensure the survival of a successful and prosperous Iran, I have agreed to cancel the attack, provided that we can quickly reach an agreement,” Trump writes on Truth Social.
Wants the Strait to be opened
He also writes that such an agreement would mean an “immediate, complete and total opening of the Strait of Hormuz and an end to Iran’s nuclear threat”.
According to sources for both AP and Axios, Saudi Arabia’s ruling Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has urged Trump in a phone call on Saturday not to escalate the conflict. The reason is said to be that Saudi Arabia expects to once again become the target of Iranian retaliatory attacks.
Several attacks in July
During the week, the American CBS, among others, has reported that Israel has prepared to participate in the planned attacks. Donald Trump writes in his post that Israel “joins me in this commitment”, referring to the canceled attacks pending a possible agreement.
There have been many rounds of talks about a settlement between the US and Iran over the past six months. The parties managed to reach a memorandum of understanding at the beginning of the summer, which would be followed by a cessation of attacks and continued negotiations. A few weeks later, however, attacks broke out again and in July the countries targeted each other for at least 14 nights.
