Democrat loses – throws support behind Republican
Democrat Haley Stevens lost the Democratic primary for the Senate in Michigan to Abdul El-Sayed. Now, Stevens is throwing her support behind the Republican candidate in the state, Mike Rogers.
This extraordinary endorsement of Rogers—who is backed by Donald Trump—comes after Stevens was asked not to attend a campaign event for El-Sayed, who defeated her by a narrow margin in August.
Although Stevens had previously criticized El-Sayed for his comments regarding Israel, she recently stated that she supported him and intended to vote for him. On Sunday, she made a complete about-face, attending a church service in Detroit alongside Rogers.
"Our Democratic Senate candidate said I was no longer welcome in his campaign and that I should stay away. And he’s right. That is why, today, I am supporting Mike Rogers in the Senate race," Stevens said in a video statement released on Sunday.
According to reports received by the AP, Haley Stevens’s longtime chief of staff has resigned following this shift, and further departures are expected shortly.
President Donald Trump, meanwhile, is celebrating. "That’s called courage, and few other people have it in them the way Haley Stevens does," he wrote on Truth Social. Abdul El-Sayed, a 41-year-old public health expert with a medical background, is perhaps the most talked-about candidate in the U.S. elections; he has distinguished himself as an opponent of war who seeks to remove the influence of large corporations from politics and expand the Medicare health insurance program.
Michigan is one of the swing states in Tuesday’s midterm elections and plays a key role in the Democrats' goal of overturning the Republicans' current majority in the Senate.
Correction: An earlier version contained an inaccurate statement regarding the departures from Haley Stevens’s staff.
