Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever has submitted his resignation following a deadlock in budget negotiations. King Philippe, however, has not yet granted his approval.
Attempts to reach an agreement on the national budget ended abruptly shortly after midnight, according to the Belgian newspaper *Le Soir*. On Monday morning, De Wever visited the palace in Brussels to submit his resignation to King Philippe.
The King, however, is holding off on a decision. A statement from the Royal Palace indicates that King Philippe is “considering” the matter and will begin holding talks with the leaders of the parties in the governing coalition on Tuesday. He is scheduled to meet with De Wever again on Friday.
In the statement, the King expresses regret over the “lack of consensus” required to reach a budget agreement. At the same time, he emphasizes that the country cannot afford a prolonged political crisis, *Le Soir* reports.
