Calm day in Gaza after Israeli military pause
Gaza on Sunday experienced the first day of relative calm in months after Israel's military announced it was temporarily taking daytime breaks to facilitate humanitarian efforts, AFP reports.
- Compared to the last few days, the day, the first day of (the holiday of) Eid al-Adha, has been almost calm and calm has reigned over the whole of Gaza, says Mahmud Basal, head of the Hamas-controlled Civil Defense Authority.
AFP correspondents in Gaza saw no fighting in northern and central areas during the day, but report some artillery fire and at least one airstrike in Rafah, and one airstrike in central Gaza in the early evening.

The UN welcomes the IDF's message: Hope for more measures
The UN humanitarian aid agency, OCHA, welcomes the announcement by the Israeli military to impose a daily pause in the offensive in the Rafah area to bring more emergency aid into the Gaza Strip. AFP writes.
At the same time, Ocha calls for more measures.
- We hope that this leads to further concrete measures by Israel to address long-standing problems that prevent a meaningful humanitarian response in Gaza, says Jens Lærke, spokesperson for Ocha.
According to Lærke, the UN and other humanitarian organizations are ready to ensure that the aid reaches everyone who needs help in Gaza.

Sources: Israel's government has not approved the IDF's plans for a "tactical pause" in Gaza
Israel's government has not approved the military's decision to impose a daily "tactical pause" in the offensive in southern Gaza. This is according to sources close to Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for Haaretz.
According to the newspaper's informant, Gallant was never informed in advance of the IDF's plans. He instead received the information when the military announced the plans on Sunday morning.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is said to have called the "tactical pause" "unacceptable", writes Haaretz further. The IDF is said to have made it clear to the prime minister that there is no change in the IDF's policy and that the fighting in Rafah should "continue as planned".
According to the IDF, the daily "tactical pause" is to last every day between 08:00 and 19:00, local time, and will continue until further notice. The aim is to let more emergency aid into Gaza.

Hamas summit: Our proposals in line with the US plan
Hamas' response to the latest proposal for a cease-fire in Gaza is in line with that put forward by US President Joe Biden. This is what the leader of the Hamas branch in Qatar, Ismail Haniyeh, says in a televised speech, Reuters writes.
The UN Security Council voted through a proposal for a ceasefire on Monday. According to the US, Israel has accepted the proposal.
Hamas has since come up with proposals for changes. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said earlier this week that some of Hamas' adjustments are feasible and some are not.
