Death toll rises to 59 – four people wanted
The death toll in the nightclub fire in North Macedonia has risen to 59, Interior Minister Pance Toskovski said, according to AFP.
35 of them have been identified, the minister said. He added that four people were wanted by police after the fire, but gave no details about who or why. It was previously reported that the club's owner had been arrested.
The fire broke out during a concert by hip-hop duo DNK at the Pulse club in the northeastern town of Kocani on Sunday night. The cause of the fire is believed to be pyrotechnics that ignited the roof of the venue.
Around 1,500 people were at the concert, which was held on Sunday night. In addition to the dead, around a hundred people were injured.
Prime Minister: “A terrible loss”
The loss of young lives in the nightclub fire in North Macedonia is “irreparable”. This is what the country’s Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski said on site in the small town of Kocani, according to The Guardian.
– In this time of deep sorrow, when our hearts are breaking with pain after the terrible tragedy, I call for unity, solidarity, compassion and responsibility.
