The new space race

Many millions of miles to Mars – managed 150 million last time

The Space X Starship rocket that Elon Musk claims will lift off to the planet Mars as early as next year exploded as recently as last week, notes the BBC.

It is the second explosion so far this year and the US aviation authority FAA is not allowing any new test launches until the cause has been investigated.

The latest explosion occurred at an altitude of about 150 miles. In 2027, when Musk's rocket is likely to reach Mars, the shortest distance to Earth will be just over ten million miles.

Elon Musk is well known for his time forecasts not being accurate, writes Forbes, listing several examples of things Musk has promised that have not yet happened.

Among other things, Musk promised in 2017 that he would arrange trips to the moon for private individuals starting in 2018.

Musk: The Starship rocket to Mars already next year

A rocket of the Starship model will lift off towards Mars at the end of next year, claims Space X founder Elon Musk on X. The Tesla robot Optimus will be on board.

If the landing is successful, landings with people on board could begin as early as 2029, according to Musk, but he adds that 2031 is more likely.
