Expert: US airstrikes unlikely to lead to major war
The risk of a major war in Yemen after the US's deadly airstrikes is small - Donald Trump is not a warmonger. This is what political science professor Jan Hallenberg, affiliated with the Swedish Institute of Foreign Policy, tells TT.
The attack, which was Trump's first against the Houthi movement, killed around 30 people. It was partly a response to reports that the Houthis had attacked American drones and aircraft, but also to the militia's threat to attack Israeli ships off Yemen, according to Hallenberg.
- It is a show of traditional American strength and a signal from the Republican side that they are more powerful than the Democrats.
The Iran-backed Houthis are likely to retaliate, but any major escalation is unlikely, Hallenberg believes. However, you can never know for sure with the Iranian regime, he adds.

Over 30 dead in Yemen – biggest attack under Trump
At least 31 people were killed after US airstrikes on Yemen, the Houthi movement's health authorities said, according to AFP.
Saturday's attack targeted several locations in the country and is the largest US military operation in the Middle East since Donald Trump took office.
The attack is condemned by Iran. The US also has "no authority" to dictate Iran's foreign policy, writes the country's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in a statement on X, AFP reports.
The move comes after Donald Trump warned Iran to continue supporting the Houthi movement in Yemen. The US attack comes after the rebels announced plans to resume attacks on Israeli ships.
Both the US and the rebels warn of new attacks
Both the US and the Houthi rebels in Yemen are threatening new attacks after the US airstrike on Saturday.
The Iran-backed rebels say they will respond to any new US attacks and "meet escalation with escalation," writes the AP.
US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth says in turn that the US will continue to attack the Houthi movement as long as the attacks on US and commercial shipping continue.
At the same time, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is calling for "utmost restraint" and an immediate halt to all military activity. He warns that an escalation could worsen the already dire humanitarian situation in Yemen.
