Amnesty criticizes Nigerian government after censorship
Amnesty International criticizes Nigerian authorities for banning the song "Tell your papa" from being played on radio and television, reports the Peoples Gazette newspaper.
The song criticizes the country's President Bola Tinubu and calls on his son to speak up for his father.
"Categorizing the song as unplayable simply because it criticizes the government and people in power is an abuse of power and unacceptable," the human rights organization said in a statement.
According to Amnesty, the banning of the song shows "a new level of intolerance towards dissenting voices" from President Bola Tinubu's government.

Song critical of the president banned from radio and television in Nigeria
Nigerian authorities have banned a song criticizing the country's President Bola Tinubu from being played on radio or television, reports the BBC. The song is called “Tell your papa” and was released earlier this week by artist Eedris Abdulkareem and immediately received a lot of attention on social media.
Tinubu took office as president in May 2023 and has since implemented reforms that have increased the cost of living for Nigerians.
The song urges the president’s influential son Seyi to correct his father.
In 2003, authorities also banned one of Abdulkareem’s songs. It then evolved into a protest song against then-president Olusegun Obasanjo.
