Trump's USA US-Russia relations

Russian-American Exchange – Ballerina for Army Fixer

Russia and the US have carried out a new prisoner exchange, the second since Donald Trump became president, reports the Wall Street Journal.

Russia is releasing Ksenia Karelina, a Russian-American ballerina. Last year, she was sentenced to twelve years in a penal colony for treason. The crime was that she had donated a few hundred roubles to a Ukrainian charity.

The US is releasing Arthur Petrov, who has dual citizenship in Germany and Russia. On US orders, he was arrested in Cyprus in 2023, suspected of having exported important electronics to the Russian military.

The exchange indicates that the countries have an accommodating attitude towards each other ahead of the negotiations on the Ukraine war, the newspaper writes.

Russia and US meet: "Ukraine not on the agenda"

Russian and US delegations are in the Russian consulate in Istanbul on Thursday for new talks between the countries, international news agencies report.

The theme of the day is normalizing relations after the war in Ukraine created a new wound between the countries. The talks are being led by embassy staff.

- Ukraine is not, absolutely not, on the agenda, says Tammy Bruce, a spokeswoman for the US State Department, to Reuters.

She continues:

- These talks are focused solely on our embassy activities, not on normalizing a bilateral relationship in general, which can only happen, as we have said, when there is peace between Russia and Ukraine.
