US pivots: China will not invade Taiwan in 2027

China currently has no plans to invade Taiwan next year, according to a US intelligence report seen by several news agencies. As recently as late 2025, the US Department of Defense assessed that China was preparing to take over Taiwan by force, and that it could possibly happen in 2027.

According to the new report, China prefers to take over Taiwan without force.

“Despite its threat to use force to force reunification [...], China prefers to achieve it without using force,” the report says.

China considers Taiwan to be its own and has repeatedly threatened to force the island under Chinese control.

Taiwan hits back at China's energy proposal

Taiwan says no to China's proposal to provide the island with energy supply assistance in exchange for the country allowing itself to be governed by Beijing, Reuters reports. It was a much-anticipated response, since Taiwan has long fought back against Chinese attempts to "reunify".

- This is of course impossible, says Deputy Minister of Economic Affairs Ho Chin-tsang before parliament.

Taiwan has previously received about a third of its fossil gas from Qatar. Just like many other countries, the island is affected by the Iran war and the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, where a large part of the world's oil is transported.

Taiwan does not import any energy from China.

China is trying to lure Taiwan with energy supplies

China is offering Taiwan energy supply assistance in exchange for the country allowing itself to be governed by Beijing, Reuters reports. A spokesman for China’s Foreign Ministry says that “peaceful reunification” would give Taiwan better protection in terms of energy supplies.

A significant part of Taiwan’s fossil gas is imported from Qatar, shipments that have been severely affected by the Iran war and the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.

Taiwan does not import any energy from China and receives significant assistance from the United States.

Taiwan has not commented on China’s offer. The statement is part of China’s attempt to make Taiwan Chinese, something the island has long opposed.
