Kent is being investigated by the FBI for leaking classified information
Republican Joe Kent is being investigated by the FBI for leaking classified information, sources familiar with the matter told NBC News. The investigation is said to have started even before Kent chose to resign earlier this week.
Kent resigned from his role as head of the US National Counterterrorism Center in protest against the war in Iran. In an open letter, he wrote that he could not support the attacks because Iran did not pose a threat to the US.
Neither the White House nor the FBI have wanted to comment on the information.
The future of the EU
SD politician's chat group causes a major row in Berlin
The European Parliament's largest party group, the conservative EPP, synced up with the far right in a secret chat group ahead of a crucial vote on migration policy. The collaboration is causing great anger in Germany because the so-called firewall against the far right AfD party is being demolished in this way. Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz has pointed fingers at EPP Chairman Manfred Weber and emphasizes that no further collaborations should take place, writes Politico.
It was EU parliamentarian Charlie Weimers (SD) who created the chat group. In a post on X on Tuesday, he wrote that the future of Europe cannot be “held hostage by Berlin’s firewall”.
Weimers told Kvartal today that he was surprised that the chat caused a political crisis in Berlin. He sees it as a variant of the Swedish Tidö cooperation at the EU level.
– It shows that there are very specific German political deadlocks, and I am keen that these deadlocks should not be exported to Brussels.
The flight to Europe
A record number of migrants have died in the Mediterranean
During the first two months of the year, at least 655 people have either died or disappeared after trying to cross the Mediterranean to reach Europe. A new grim record, according to figures from the UN migration agency IOM, writes AFP.
The figure is more than double that of the same period last year. This is explained, among other things, by storms, closed borders and complicated rescue missions.
Arnaud Banos, a migration expert at the French research agency CNRS, says that closed land borders expose migrants to great risks because the sea becomes the only way.
– The more we say that we want to secure our borders for humanitarian reasons, the more we increase the danger.
Meningitis outbreak
Seven new cases – “the outbreak is not under control”
Seven new cases of meningitis have been discovered in Kent, England. This is reported by British media.
The number of cases has thus risen to 27. It is still too early to conclude that the outbreak is under control, according to local authorities.
Two young women have died from the disease and several others have become seriously ill.
