Stoltenberg: NATO will not survive if the US leaves

NATO as we know it would not survive if the US leaves the alliance. This is what former NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg tells SVT's Agenda.

Therefore, it is very important that the US and Europe stick together, despite the great frictions under Donald Trump's presidency, he says, while warning against speculating too much.

- There must be no uncertainty in Moscow about our willingness to defend each other, he says.

He does not believe that a European NATO or an EU army can replace the US's role as a security guarantor.

Today the summit in Helsingborg formally begins, where the foreign ministers of the NATO countries will meet to talk about the alliance's defense and support for Ukraine. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is on the guest list.

– The fact that Marco Rubio is coming is a feather in the cap for the Swedish government, says Magnus Christiansson, a researcher at the Swedish National Defense University, to TT.

This is the first time that Sweden has hosted a NATO summit. The alliance's former spokesperson Oana Lungescu has previously told SvD that Sweden has quickly "become a key player in NATO".

The meeting will formally begin at 10:00, and the event will be surrounded by a massive police operation. SVT Nyheter Skåne reports that it is one of the largest police operations in southern Sweden to date.
