Poland has thwarted what appears to be an attempted Russian provocation, Prime Minister Donald Tusk has announced.

Shortly after midnight, Tusk was informed that “disturbing movements” had been observed along Poland’s border with the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad.

“We managed to prevent an attempted provocation—if that was indeed the intention,” he told reporters on Tuesday.

Details are scarce, but Tusk mentioned, among other things, the presence of individuals with flashlights in the border area.

In recent times, Poland has strengthened security along its borders with Russia and Belarus. On Tuesday, Tusk confirmed that a special operation had been carried out in the Warmia-Masuria and Podlaskie regions, involving police and security forces, in response to intelligence regarding planned acts of sabotage.

According to Tusk, there is intelligence suggesting a possible incursion by armed men.
