A plane has crashed in Kathmandu.

The plane crashed as it was about to take off.

Several people are said to be dead.

A Saurya Airlines plane has crashed while taking off from Kathmandu airport, reports the Kathmandu Post.

- 19 people, among them staff, were on board the plane that was going to Pokhara, says spokesperson Premnath Thakur at Tribhuvan International Airport to the newspaper.

According to witnesses, the plane was about to take off but suddenly tilted and a wing hit the ground. The plane immediately caught fire, the newspaper writes.

Local media reports that people who were not on the plane have also died because they were where the plane crashed.

So far, a total of 22 people are said to have died.

18 people have died in a plane crash in Nepal. One of the two pilots survived and has been taken to hospital with injuries.

- 18 bodies have been retrieved, among them a foreign citizen, said police spokesman Dan Bahadur Karki to the AFP news agency.

The crew and 16 passengers were Nepalese nationals. One deceased person is said to be a foreign citizen, but of which nationality has not been announced.

The crash occurred when the domestic flight was due to take off in the capital Kathmandu shortly after 11 o'clock on Wednesday morning, with destination Pokhara.

According to witnesses, the plane was about to take off but suddenly tilted and a wing hit the ground. The plane, which belongs to the Saurya Airlines fleet, immediately caught fire, writes the Kathmandu Post newspaper.

The airport, which is Nepal's largest, remains closed and rescue personnel and investigators are working on the scene.
