Trump: I think annexation of Greenland will happen
US President Donald Trump says that an agreement is needed on Greenland.
– I think annexation will happen, he said on Thursday, according to Reuters.
Trump refers to annexation being in the interest of “international security”, writes AFP.
The president has made several statements about somehow taking control of Greenland.
In Tuesday’s election, the party that received the most votes was the Democrats, who are in favor of a slow independence process and continued close relations with Denmark.
Donald Trump also said on Tuesday that he intends to order 48 icebreakers. He has previously said that the US Coast Guard needs more icebreakers to increase its presence in the Arctic Ocean and around Greenland, according to the Wall Street Journal.
Greenland's outgoing leader to Trump: "Enough is enough"
Greenlanders will not accept being treated disrespectfully. This is what the self-government's outgoing leader Mute Egede wrote on Facebook after Trump once again aired his plans to annex Greenland.
"I cannot accept that under any circumstances," Egede wrote.
Since no new government has taken office after Tuesday's election, he is calling all party leaders to a meeting as soon as possible.
"We must toughen up our tone against Trump. Enough is enough," he wrote.
