Middle East Crisis Gaza War

Elite Soldiers Protest War in Open Letter

Over 250 reservists and former soldiers of Israel's elite intelligence unit 8200 have protested the ongoing war in Gaza in an open letter, writes Haaretz.

The war serves "mainly political and personal interests rather than security interests" and its continuation "does not contribute to any of its stated goals and will lead to the deaths of hostages, soldiers and innocent people," they write.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has issued a statement in which he states that this and another recent letter from air force reservists are "propaganda lies."

"These letters have been written by a small group of radicals controlled by foreign organizations who have a single goal - to overthrow the right-wing government," Netanyahu writes according to Haaretz.

Israeli attacks kill only women and children on over 30 occasions

A large number of recent Israeli attacks in Gaza have killed only women and children, the UN Human Rights Committee said, according to AFP.

Between March 18 and April 9, Israel carried out 224 attacks on residential buildings and refugee camps. In 36 of them, only women and children were among the fatalities recorded so far.

The UN committee warned on Friday that the Israeli military's actions in Gaza are an existential threat to Palestinians as a people.

"We are deeply concerned that Israel appears to be subjecting Palestinians in Gaza to conditions that make it impossible for Palestinians to continue to exist as a group," said a statement from spokeswoman Ravina Shamdasani.

Israel fired 100 shots when medics were killed

Israeli soldiers fired more than a hundred shots when the 15 Palestinian medics were killed near Rafah in March, according to an audio analysis commissioned by two experts for the BBC.

One of the victims recorded the incident on his mobile phone. Experts have analysed the audio file to measure the distance between the shots and the phone's microphone.

The review shows that the Israeli military fired the first shots from a distance of 43 meters and that the last shots were fired from a distance of twelve meters.

This contradicts Israel's previous claims that the first shots were fired from a long distance. Military experts the BBC spoke to say that shelling from a distance of 50 to 100 meters is considered close range.

Israel has not commented on the review.

Judge: Mahmoud Khalil can be deported for his views

The United States can deport Mahmoud Khalil, who was arrested on March 10 after organizing demonstrations against the Gaza war at Columbia University. An immigration judge will decide on Friday, American media reports.

Khalil has appealed the deportation decision, citing that he has a residence permit and that his political views and statements should be protected by the Constitution.

The state, represented by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, is referring to a rarely used law from 1952 that means that the Secretary of State can decide on deportation if a foreigner's presence in the country threatens US foreign policy, writes NBC.

Rubio has filed a short, undated submission to the court stating that Khalil's "past, present or anticipated beliefs and connections" are contrary to the interests of the United States, regardless of whether they are legal.

His order is sufficient evidence, according to Judge Jamee Comans:

“There is no indication that Congress intended an immigration judge to review the Secretary of State on matters of foreign policy,” she said, according to The Guardian.
