South Korea and Syria Establish Diplomatic Relations
South Korea announces that it has established diplomatic relations with Syria and that the countries will open embassies in each other's countries, Yonhap reports.
South Korea has until now had no diplomatic relations with Syria because the country's former dictatorial family, the al-Assad family, was closely allied with North Korea.
After the overthrow of the al-Assad regime, the country's new government has broken with North Korea, which according to South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yul makes it possible to establish relations between the countries.
Cho Tae-yul recently met with Syria's acting president Ahmed al-Sharaa and announced that South Korean companies are ready to assist in the reconstruction of Syria and offer humanitarian aid.
Seoul Now Has Ties with All Countries Except North Korea
South Korea has established diplomatic relations with Syria, fulfilling its goal of establishing diplomatic relations with all member states of the United Nations except North Korea, Yonhap reports.
After South Korea established a similar relationship with Cuba last year, Syria was the only country left on Seoul's list. Syria's former dictator Bashar al-Assad was close to North Korea, but the country's new government has ended that relationship.
"This opens a new chapter in cooperation with Syria, whose bilateral relations with South Korea had been severed due to its close ties with North Korea," the South Korean Foreign Ministry wrote in a statement.
