Russian social media campaign aims to help Orbán win

Russia is said to be behind an ongoing disinformation campaign aimed at helping Viktor Orbán win the Hungarian election, sources with knowledge of the matter have told the Financial Times.

Hundreds of posts on social media portray the incumbent prime minister as the only candidate who can keep Hungary sovereign. At the same time, Orbán's opponent, opposition leader Péter Magyar, is described as an EU "puppet".

According to the FT, the Kremlin-linked media company Social Design Agency is behind the campaign. Western countries have imposed sanctions on the company after it created the disinformation campaign "Doppelgänger", which spread fake news and AI-generated content.

The Kremlin and Hungary deny involvement in the campaign.

The Bus fire in Switzerland
Police: Bus fire not being investigated as a terrorist crime

The fire that killed six people on a bus in western Switzerland yesterday was intentional, Swiss police say. However, the incident is not being investigated as a terrorist act, according to AFP.

The fire broke out on a bus in the town of Kerzers in the canton of Freiburg at 6:30 p.m. and videos from the incident show meter-high flames pouring from the vehicle's windows.

Reports have circulated that the fire started after a passenger set himself on fire, a report that the police would neither confirm nor deny.

Police spokesman Frederic Papaux says that there is much evidence that the fire was arson, but there is no evidence that it was a terrorist attack.
