Middle East Crisis - Reactions

Macron: Iran's capabilities have not been reduced to zero

Iran's military capabilities have been reduced, but not to zero. This is what French President Emmanuel Macron said, according to AFP.

- Significant damage has already been done to Iran's military ballistic capabilities, but the country continues to attack several countries in the region, he said in connection with a meeting of leaders of the G7 countries.

He also said that US President Donald Trump needs to clarify his goals and the pace he wants to set for operations in Iran.

Meloni distances himself from the war: "Part of a growing trend"

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni neither condemned the war in Iran nor justified it earlier this week. Now she has taken a clearer position, reports Politico.

In a speech to parliament on Wednesday, she said that what is happening in the Middle East is part of a "growing trend of interventions outside the framework of international law".

In the speech, she also condemned the attack on a school in which at least 150 people were killed, calling it a “massacre.”

The war in Iran is deeply unpopular in Italy and the population is overwhelmingly negative about being drawn into another conflict in the Middle East.

Meloni has been seen as one of Donald Trump’s closest allies in Europe and as recently as three days ago he praised Italy and Meloni for sending air defenses to the Middle East.

UN warns: War threatens humanitarian supply chains

The UN warns that the war in Iran and the unrest in the Middle East threaten humanitarian supply chains worldwide, reports CNN.

UN humanitarian chief Tom Fletcher says that disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, for example, could have direct consequences for deliveries of humanitarian aid to Africa.

He therefore calls on all parties to the conflict to enable the transport of humanitarian aid through the Strait of Hormuz.

– We are currently living in a moment of grave danger, says Fletcher according to AFP.
