Middle East Crisis Iran War

All six dead in tanker plane crash in Iraq

All six crew members died when the American tanker plane crashed in Iraq, the US military says according to the AP.

It was previously reported that two survived. What caused the accident is still being investigated, but the military's central command writes that the plane was neither shot down by an enemy nor by mistake by an ally.

The plane was a KC-135 and two planes were involved in the incident. The second plane landed without any damage.

Trump: Iran's regime will fall – but not immediately

Iran's regime will be brought down by the Iranian people – but "maybe not immediately". Donald Trump says this in an interview with Fox News Radio.

– I think it's a big obstacle to get over for people who don't have guns. I think it's a very big obstacle. It will happen, but maybe not immediately, says the president.

Furthermore, Trump says that he thinks Putin will probably help Iran "a little bit."

– And he probably thinks we're helping Ukraine, right?

Top Democrat: Trump's ill-planned war fuels Putin

Jeanne Shaheen, the top Democrat on the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee, is strongly critical of the Trump administration's temporary lifting of sanctions on Russian oil.

In a post on X, she writes that Trump is choosing to lift sanctions on Vladimir Putin, while Russia is helping Iran attack Americans in the Middle East.

"Instead of putting pressure on Russia's faltering economy, the president's ill-planned war is giving Putin an unexpected economic boost," she writes.

The US relief applies to oil that is already at sea until April 11. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent believes the measure is needed to increase access to oil by blocking

Analysis: US risks new "Vietnam war" in Iran

US President Donald Trump may not be able to end the war in Iran, even if he wanted to, writes CNN's Nick Paton Walsh in an analysis.

"Trump has now fallen into the oldest trap in modern warfare: the belief that a quick, surgical military intervention will produce quick and lasting political results. The Soviet Union did it in Afghanistan, the United States in Iraq in 2003, and Putin did it in Ukraine - where the war is still ongoing," he writes.

He also writes that the US may have rushed into the war to exploit an opportunity for a targeted attack on the regime, based on intelligence from Israel. But Israel's ambitions in the region differ from those of the US, and a protracted war would benefit Benjamin Netanyahu's ambitions.

One clear effect of the war in Iran is the volatile oil market. Iran has closed the vital shipping route through the Strait of Hormuz, and analyst Victoria Taylor tells Sky News that this means there is a risk that the US will be forced to deploy ground troops.

– It is a big taboo in American circles, even within the Trump administration, because it ultimately risks dragging the US into a Vietnam-like war without end.
