Nearly eight weeks after the Danish election, there is still no new government in sight.

On Sunday, Venstre's Troels Lund Poulsen, the current exploratory leader, announced that the negotiations are paused.

"All the parties have different wishes and we want to use Monday to consider a number of political proposals before we move forward with the negotiations," Lund Poulsen wrote in a post on Instagram.

The Venstre leader was appointed last week as the new interim leader by King Frederik X after the country's outgoing Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen failed to form a new government after just over a month.

It is unclear when negotiations might resume.

The protracted government formation process after the election on March 24 has lasted a record long time.
