Dominican Republic Roof Collapse

Desperate relatives watch at crater: “She’s alive!”

Dominicans are flocking to the crater in the capital Santo Domingo where the roof collapsed during a nightclub concert, killing at least 44 people on Tuesday night.

“She’s alive, she’s alive! She’s spoken to rescue workers and they’re trying to get her out,” Mayorix Diloné told her mother on the phone after her cousin managed to make herself known, Diario Libre reports.

The rescue effort is complicated by the amount of rubble and the risk of further collapses.

Many others are gathering at the city’s sports stadium. There, the blood center has set up a temporary blood donation center with plastic chairs under a fabric that provides shade.

“All Dominicans should come. Today it’s them, tomorrow it could be us,” says volunteer Geraldo López.

At least 44 dead in club collapse – search underway in rubble

At least 44 people have died and more than 150 injured when the roof collapsed during a nightclub concert in the Dominican Republic, reports the AP.

Among the deceased are provincial governor Nelsy Cruz and the saxophonist who was on stage playing. One of the injured is merengue singer Rubby Pérez. A video published by the Dominican news channel Hoy Día shows the lights going out and the concert being interrupted as the nightclub building literally collapses.

Voices are still being heard from inside the rubble and 400 rescue workers with thermal imaging cameras are continuing the search “as long as there is hope of life,” rescue leader Juan Manuel Méndez told the Dominican Diario Libre.
