Change of power in Germany
Sources: Government coalition in place in Germany

German Christian Democrats CDU/CSU and Social Democrats SPD have agreed on a government coalition just over five weeks after the election. This is reported by NTV based on information from sources involved in the negotiations.

An agreement in principle has reportedly been reached at the top level. Only details remain, according to the information.

It has already been known that CDU leader Friedrich Merz will become Chancellor. His party received 28.6 percent of the vote and thus became the largest party in the election on February 23.

The Social Democratic SPD made its worst election in history with 16.4 percent. The far-right AfD doubled its support to 20.8 percent, but is being left out of the cooperation.

Reactions to the tariffs
Ipsos: Clear majority against Donald Trump's punitive tariffs

A majority of American voters are against Donald Trump's tariffs, according to a new poll conducted by Ipsos on behalf of Reuters.

57 percent of respondents say they are against the large tariff package that was presented last week. 39 percent say they support the president.

When asked about the consequences of the trade war, 73 percent say they expect rising prices for basic goods in the coming six months.

China expert concerned: “There will be an incredible price shock”

The US will impose import tariffs of 104 percent on goods from China overnight Wednesday, Swedish time. China, for its part, is ready to fight “to the end,” according to a statement from a spokesperson for the Department of Commerce earlier on Tuesday.

The escalation between the superpowers worries the Swedish Institute’s China expert Alexis von Sydow.

“Then everyone is in a bad way,” he says of the 104 percent tariffs to Aftonbladet and continues:

“Everything that the US buys from China will disappear. There will be an incredible price shock in every way and shortages of all kinds of things.”
