The tariff crisis Trump's tariff policy

The question remains: What happens to the trillions paid?

The US government has already collected over $130 billion, just under 1200 billion kronor, from the now invalidated trade tariffs. In its ruling, the US Supreme Court did not mention anything about what happens to that money, writes Politico.

Donald Trump turned against that last night:

- Don't you think they could have put a single sentence in there that said 'keep the money' or 'don't keep the money', right?

Lower courts will probably now have to answer that question in many and long lawsuits. Experts predict a logistical "nightmare" and in his submission, Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh warned that it will be a "mess".

Several business leaders tell NBC that refunds would be an important lifeline for the struggling companies. But regardless, the damage is already done, says Tom Wetzel, owner of the board game company Red Raven.

– The damage cannot be undone, he says.

Republicans sigh as tariff war intensifies: "Why are we fucking ourselves?"

Secretly, many Republicans agreed in a collective sigh of relief after the US Supreme Court ruled on Friday that Donald Trump's tariffs were illegal, writes Politico. Ahead of the fall mid-term elections, the high cost of living is still a burning issue, and many of Trump's free-trade-positive party colleagues will face voters in swing states.

Then Trump announced new ten percent tariffs, with new uncertainty as a result.

– Why do we have to fuck ourselves? asks a Republican politician rhetorically.

– He should have received congressional approval from the beginning. Now it's destabilizing the economy.

The Wall Street Journal writes that the timing is fueling Republican anxiety ahead of the mid-term elections. Some of the new tariffs will require congressional approval in five months, while others will take several months to implement. In both cases, this means tough tariff decisions will be made during the summer, in the midst of the election campaign, when many Republicans are extremely sensitive to criticism on the economy.

Reports of Trump's anger when the decision came: "These fucking courts"

When the Supreme Court struck down Donald Trump's trade tariffs, he was in a breakfast meeting behind closed doors with several of the country's governors. According to several media reports, he received the decision on a piece of paper from his advisor.

- So it's a loss, then? Trump asked the advisor, according to WSJ reports.

Reports about what happened next differ. According to CBS News, Trump called the decision a "disgrace" and stormed out of the meeting. According to CNN's White House reporter Kristen Holmes, the reaction was stronger than that and Trump gave an angry monologue about the ruling.

- "These fucking courts," he is said to have said, among other things.
