US governor invoices Trump for 80 billion kronor
Illinois Democratic Governor JB Pritzker has sent an invoice to Donald Trump for 8.68 billion dollars, almost 80 billion Swedish kronor, after the Supreme Court ruled Trump's trade tariffs illegal. CNN reports.
Pritzker writes in his letter to the president that each family in the state has had to pay an average of 1,700 dollars, just over 15,000 kronor, for Trump's trade tariffs and that they are now entitled to a refund.
"Write the check," he writes in a post on X.
Pritzker and Trump have been in a bitter dispute since Trump took office in the White House. Pritzker is very critical of how the president uses his power and Trump has responded by threatening to call in the military to Illinois' largest city, Chicago. It is not very likely that any money will actually be paid out.
FT and WSJ editorials: “Critical uncertainty remains”
Despite the US Supreme Court overturning the trade tariffs, uncertainty remains, according to the international business press’s editorial pages.
The decision provides temporary relief for US companies and trading partners, writes the Financial Times editorial page. But Trump’s new tariffs mean that crippling uncertainty could remain for industries and countries that are unsure of what tariffs they face and when, they write.
Trump is planning 10 percent tariffs under Section 122. “This tariff is also bad policy, but it is legal,” writes the Wall Street Journal editorial page.
