Peru fires its fourth president in six years
Peru's interim president José Jerí has been ousted by Congress after four months in office, reports the AP. Members of all parties voted in favor of the decision, which was made by 75 votes to 24 after allegations of corruption.
Jerí has had several private meetings with Chinese businessmen and favored them in his previous political assignments, according to the investigative news site Ojo publico.
He is also accused of hiring several unqualified young women as staff after late-night meetings in the presidential palace, writes Bloomberg.
Low interest in taking over Peru's catapult chair
There is no crowding in the starting field for the election of a new interim president after José Jerí was ousted on Tuesday. Speaker Fernando Rospigliosi, who is constitutionally in the running, has said he will not take office. He has given parties until 6 p.m. local time to nominate candidates for a vote on Wednesday, according to La Republica.
As of 4 p.m. Peruvian time, two have been nominated: former speaker María del Carmen Alva of the centrist Acción Popular party and congressman Edgar Reymundo of the leftist Bloque Democrático party.
Regular presidential elections are due in April.
