Tariff crisis • Trump's tariff policy

Trump announces new tariffs: "The Supreme Court made me more powerful"

Donald Trump is furious at the Supreme Court's decision to invalidate his punitive tariffs.

- They are a disgrace to our country, he says of the yes-voting judges at a press conference on Friday evening.

The president also announces that the United States will introduce new global punitive tariffs of 10 percent on top of existing ones, for five months.

- The Supreme Court made me even more powerful, the president says, among other things.

Trump claims that the tariffs imposed to protect national security will remain in place and will not be affected by the Supreme Court's decision, which is linked to another law.

Bessent: Trump has bigger trade weapons to use

The Supreme Court may have rejected Trump's tariffs, but they indirectly gave him even more power by establishing his right to impose complete trade embargoes. This is what US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told Reuters.

– We will return to the same tariff levels for the countries. It will just be done in a less direct and more complicated way, he continues.

Since Trump can no longer collect tariffs – but still has even more powerful trade weapons in his arsenal, such as a total trade ban – other countries should fall into line and stick to the trade agreements that have already been concluded, Bessent's message is.

Sources: Trump was taken to task – "boiled inside"

Donald Trump was holding a meeting with governors behind closed doors in the White House when his aide gave him a paper with the HD's tariff decision, which took him to task, writes the Wall Street Journal.

– So it was a loss, then? he said, according to sources who were in the room.

He told the assembled governors that he was calm on the outside but “boiled on the inside,” calling the ruling “disgraceful.” He then cut short a question-and-answer session and sat in the Oval Office with his staff to flesh out the administration’s response.

Three hours later, he held the 45-minute press conference in which he railed against the Supreme Court judges and promised new global tariffs.
