Peace talks to continue tomorrow: “Very tense”
The trilateral talks in Geneva have been suspended after six hours and are to resume on Wednesday, Reuters reports.
– It was very tense, a source close to the Russian delegation told AFP.
The US delegation sat at the main table, with the Russian and Ukrainian on opposite sides, according to TT. Russia’s former chief negotiator has been replaced by Vladimir Putin’s advisor Vladimir Medinsky, known for making maximalist demands.
Both political and military representatives are participating in the negotiations, writes Ukraine’s chief negotiator Rustem Umerov on Facebook according to Sky News.
Replaced Russian negotiator signals tougher stance
No news is expected from the trilateral talks on peace in Ukraine during the day. This was announced by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, Reuters reports.
The talks, which start in the afternoon, are taking place behind closed doors in Geneva. Russia has changed its negotiating leader compared to the previous round in Abu Dhabi. The ultra-conservative former culture minister Vladimir Medinsky is now leading the delegation, which according to Yle's Russia reporter Anders Mård signals a tougher stance.
"When Vladimir Medinsky sits at the table, the other side can always expect at least two major themes: Russian spheres of interest and the Russian world," he writes in an analysis.
