UN warns of acute food crisis in Lebanon

The UN World Food Programme (WFP) warns that Lebanon is facing an acute food crisis as a result of Israeli attacks, reports Reuters. According to the WFP, vegetable prices have risen by more than 20 percent and bread prices by 17 percent since the beginning of March.

WFP country director Allison Oman says the situation is rapidly deteriorating as incomes are disrupted and demand increases among displaced families.

“What we are seeing is not just a refugee crisis, it is rapidly becoming a food crisis,” she told Reuters.

In southern Lebanon, more than 80 percent of markets have stopped functioning. The WFP says about 900,000 people in the country are now living in food insecurity, a figure that is expected to rise further.
