South China Sea Conflict
Philippines Opens Base on Disputed Thitu
The Philippines has opened a major coast guard base on an island in a disputed area of the South China Sea, reports the AP.
The base has been established on Thitu Island, which has been controlled by the Philippines for decades but is also claimed by China.
A sign on the new building describes it as a “steadfast guardian of our sovereignty.”
“This is a permanent step to show that our coast guard is ready to defend our interests in the waters, our fishermen, their livelihoods and, most importantly, our sovereignty,” said Philippine Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez.
China claims almost the entire South China Sea, and in recent years the Philippine and Chinese coast guards have been involved in several incidents. Chinese ships have boarded Philippine boats, blocked them and used water cannons.
