Middle East Crisis Iran War

The Iranian delegation has arrived in Pakistan

The delegation from Iran has arrived in the Pakistani capital Islamabad ahead of negotiations with the US, state television reports according to the AP.

The speaker of the Iranian parliament, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, is leading the delegation. This week he came out and said that talks with the US are “unreasonable”, as three of the points in the ceasefire have been violated, according to him.

The US is sending, among others, Vice President JD Vance, envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner.

Trump threatens new attacks if no agreement is reached

Donald Trump says that the US is “reloading” the weapons on American warships, and new attacks are to be expected if no agreement is reached during the talks in Pakistan. He said this in an interview with the New York Post.

– We are loading the ships with the best ammunition, the best weapons ever made, even better than before and we blew them to pieces, he says.

– And if we don't get a deal, we will use them, and we will use them very effectively.

Vice President JD Vance, envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner have been sent to Pakistan to participate in peace talks with Iran this weekend.

Vance ahead of talks: Don't try to play the US off

US Vice President JD Vance has traveled to Pakistan to participate in negotiations with Iran.

– If the Iranians are willing to negotiate in good faith, we are certainly willing to extend an open hand. But if they try to play us off, they will find that the negotiating team is not very receptive, he told reporters shortly before departure, according to AFP.

Both sides have accused each other of not living up to the terms of the ceasefire. Vance and the other delegates have been tasked with transforming the fragile ceasefire into a more stable peace.

According to sources, Iran's uranium enrichment and free passage through the Strait of Hormuz will be discussed during the talks.

Middle East crisis  Reactions

"Exiled prince" wants the US and Israel to continue bombing Iran

The former crown prince of Iran, Reza Pahlavi, is deeply skeptical of the peace talks between the US and Iran that are taking place this weekend. He tells SVT Nyheter.

- I doubt that there will be any breakthrough in the diplomatic negotiations, because it is incredibly unlikely that the conditions from both sides will be met.

He believes that a pause in the fighting could be used by Iran to rebuild the Revolutionary Guard.

Instead, he believes that the US and Israel should continue the attacks on Iran, as this would, according to him, increase the pressure on the regime and give the Iranian people a chance to overthrow the regime.

However, there is a risk that the regime will become more aggressive and unpredictable under increased pressure, and that it could pose a greater threat than before the war began, says Reza Pahlavi.
