The climate threat Extreme weather in Europe

The fire outside Paris spreads: “Like in a movie”

The large fire in the Fontainebleau forest south of Paris is not yet under control.

During the night, the fire spread, split in two and now covers an area about three times the size of Gibraltar, writes AFP.

A total of 850 firefighters are fighting the flames. According to President Emmanuel Macron, "all resources" are being mobilized, writes Le Figaro.

67-year-old Carole Butrak is one of around 1,000 people who have been evacuated from their homes. She tells Le Monde how she saw an enormous cloud of smoke on the horizon.

- I never thought I would experience anything like this. It's like a movie, I'm speechless.

"Flesh-eating" bacteria thrive when the seas get warmer

The "flesh-eating" bacteria Vibrio vulnificus can cause seasickness and thrives in warm, preferably brackish water. For those planning to take a dip this summer, it is a good idea to keep an eye on open wounds before jumping in, as the bacteria enters the body through wounds or food such as oysters, writes TT.

Vibrio vulnificus is not a carnivore but can in rare cases cause necrotizing fasciitis. Then the body's tissue breaks down at such a rapid pace that in the worst case scenario amputation may be required just a few hours after the process has started.

European authorities warn that the bacteria is thriving when the surface temperature of the world's oceans rises as a result of climate change. People who are tourists in the Mediterranean - but also in Sweden - this summer are urged to avoid swimming with open wounds in warm water.

Two arrested in connection with the forest fire outside Paris

Two people have been arrested in connection with the massive forest fire in the Fontainebleau forest six miles south of Paris. This was announced by French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez on the television channel France 2.

The Interior Minister strongly suspects that the fires were started intentionally, he says.

So far this summer, 59 people across the country have been arrested on suspicion of "intentional or accidental arson," according to Nunez.
