Millions evacuated as Typhoon Bavi approaches China
Typhoon Bavi has approached the coast of southern China. About 1.7 million people have been evacuated, state media reported.
Bavi has been described as the worst typhoon in the area in decades. Late Saturday night, it approached Zhejiang province in eastern China with winds of 40 meters per second, the Xinhua news agency reported.
The typhoon is expected to move further northwest while weakening.
Before Bavi reached China, it devastated northern Taiwan and southern Japan with strong winds, torrential rain and waves up to twelve meters high. Thousands of people were without power on Saturday morning in the southern prefecture of Okinawa.
More than 250 flights have been canceled in the region, NHK reported. In Taiwan, about eighty people were injured in accidents caused by the storm.
